Jim Lelko is a Tax Director at Sorren, based in Madison, Wisconsin, where he provides strategic tax consulting and advisory services to high-net-worth individuals and complex investment structures. With more than 30 years of experience in the financial services industry, Jim brings extensive technical knowledge and seasoned leadership to his work. Prior to joining Sorren, he served as a Tax Director at a large Chicago-based family office, advising the family’s principal and overseeing tax matters related to diverse investments. Earlier in his career, Jim was admitted to partnership at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he specialized in financial services taxation at the Big Four level.
Jim is drawn to the technical rigor and high standards of the tax profession. He enjoys navigating the Internal Revenue Code and its regulations to identify thoughtful, strategic solutions for his clients. Throughout his career, he has developed a reputation for delivering top-tier client service and building strong, lasting relationships. One notable accomplishment includes successfully challenging a $1.7 million IRS assessment related to an international tax matter—ultimately converting the proposed liability into a $1.0 million refund after extensive discussions and an appeal before a Federal Appeals Judge. In addition to advising clients, Jim is passionate about coaching and mentoring professionals within the tax department, fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence.
Outside of work, Jim and his wife enjoy traveling throughout Europe, meeting new people, and sharing great meals. When at home in Wisconsin, he spends time fishing and hunting in the north woods, appreciating the balance between professional rigor and time outdoors.
